Composed entirely from Gertrude Stein’s plays, texts, and letters, GERTRUDE & ALICE: A LIKENESS TO LOVING is a touching, often hilarious journey through the unparalleled lives and times of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. As one of this century's great artistic figures, Stein's passion was to renew the meaning of the word by forging new ways for the reader to experience language in a more “syncopated” present. This passion was fueled by a loyal partner: Alice Babette Toklas; wife, lover, friend, secretary, house-keeper, gardener, publisher and finally, perpetrator of Gertrude's artistic legacy. Bold in their persons, they lived lives without apology, while their "daily life" was kept private from the scrutiny of family and the public. The women's struggles with art, sex, jealousy, money, fame and the major personalities of their time are unraveled in rhythms perhaps even more contemporary now than in Stein’s time. GERTRUDE & ALICE speaks the language of a remarkable relationship between remarkable women and testifies to their unmistakable place as mothers of modernism.
